Pharmacists of different levels are engaged in the services to the nation in different spheres of the society in different capacities. In West Bengal, the Pharmacist, engaged in different hospitals and health centers, are only the paramedical staff of the Department of Health and Family Welfare having Technical qualification approved by the All India Council of Technical Education (as the notification of the Govt. of India).
No person other than Pharmacist are permitted to handle drugs as per provision under section 42 of the Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940 as the job is highly technical in nature and for this reason, the producer of getting registration as a Pharmacist and allied matters are laid down in a separate Act of the Govt. of India i.e. The Pharmacy Act 1948.
Pharmacist can only be appointed to perform their duties if they got registered in Pharmacy Council and they have to update their registration. The name of a registered pharmacist can be removed from the register by the council if found guilty in discharging his duties, leading to supervision / retrenchment from the job. Such provision is made to avert any kind of laxity from his end as he could be fatal at times and only applicable to the pharmacist among all paramedical staff serving under Govt. of West Bengal.
The drug development is a very dynamic field which is evident from the fact that introduction of a new drug for a disease is happening in every other day. Least to say, as many as 161 new drugs have come  to the market for use in India as well as West Bengal from 01.01.08 to 31.07.08 only. The state Govt. has realized the importance of upgrading the knowledge of pharmacist about drugs and for this reason different training programs are being conducted by the govt. from time to time.
The pharmacy service is an emergency service in 24hrs x 365 days format working schedule in the health care system.
